Student A: Great passion for English and style of teaching. It makes you want to come to class because the lessons are not boring but informative and necessary rather than busywork. Also, the lesson plans were great and I liked how things were timed and everything flowed. Spending all class on one activity sucks and we were able to get done many 10-20 minute activities.

Student B: I’ve heard from many students who hate going to their ENGL 1101 class and have awful professors that make them hate writing and want to never take a lit class again; I’ve heard from other people that have professors that only really focus on grammar, making writing tedious and getting an A feel impossible, so the students think why bother? This was not the case for me in this class. The grading contract and the focus on growth vs having a strict rubric made me think about how I can improve my own standards vs trying to fit into a box, and I can look at a before and after ENGL 1101 and make a distinction between the writing I had before and after this class, as well as how I approached it. I think a good ENGL 1101 class should prepare you for writing regardless of what major you are, and this is definitely how I feel as I’m finishing the semester. 10/10 would take again.
Professor Fontenot has also always been very approachable as well as accessible for office hours and reviewing paper’s before they are due to make sure the quality is where it needs to be.

Student C: She was always willing to help us improve and grow as a student. Even though some of the assignments were challenging, she always guided us through and helped us until we were comfortable with them. She cared about us, not just as students but as people, and she was very understanding about our circumstances. I would definitely take her courses again if I have the opportunity in the future.

Spring 2020 – ENGL 1102

Note: because the semester suddenly moved online in March, only a small number of students completed the evaluation and even fewer left text comments.

Student A: Ms.Fontenot is the best english teacher I have ever had. I have learned important techniques that I will actually use for the rest of my life.

Student B: The instructor for this course was always so helpful with her students and did a great job with making the course engaging. I always enjoyed going to this class, and that was definitely a good thing since this class was at 8 a.m. I learned a lot about how to become a better writer in this class as well because of the help of the teacher.

Note: again, because the class took place online, many students chose not to fill out the evaluation form and even fewer left comments.

Student A: very personable, caring – allows students to really participate and made this crazy semester flow smoothly

Student B: My professor is very compassionate. Beginning and ending every online class by wishing us the best, telling us that things will get better. She allows us time to reflect on our lives, making sure we are eating, drinking, and sleeping enough. She gives me the true sense that she cares about us. As far as teaching, she has a great style of interactive lecturing, pausing to ask questions to allow us to reflect on how each topic relates to us. My only complain would be her email response time, but I do understand everyone, especially Graduate students, have a lot on their plate.

Student A: Did a really great job at explaining what to do in assignments while encouraging us to really learn about what we can do to make our writing better.

Student B: Professor Fontenot has always gone above and beyond to make sure we knew the assignment and understood the content we had to look over for homework. The reading was always beneficial to what we were working on at the time, and she went over it well.

Student C: Professor Fontenot made my first year writing experience amazing, and this class helped me spark my love for writing again.

Student D: The teacher was very thorough in instructions and in making sure that we understood the assignments. The teacher was very accessible outside of class, and it was easy to contact her. All of the course content for the semester was provided by the teacher which was extremely helpful.

Student E: She is very passionate about what she is teaching. Her feedback is really helpful and she is a very understanding teacher that does her best to accommodate students. I felt well prepared in her class and she encouraged all students to do their best. There is a lot of opportunity for feedback. Through peer reviews and teacher comments. It is a very good course and gave me more confidence as a writer.
